Ask Me Anything About Adversity, August 2024 Edition
My wrists need a rest. I also want to try out video. Let's have the best of both worlds.
My wrists have been bothering me recently. It’s a combination of weakening arms due to my disease and lots of typing over the last few months. Between the book, this newsletter, and a few freelance writing assignments I’ve taken on to pay the bills, I am typing for several hours each day. Right now, I’m paying the price.
This is something I’ll have to manage going forward; it is what it is. It’s like when athletes are rested periodically to stay fresh for the playoffs.
Fortunately, there are other ways I can make an impact besides writing.
This week, I thought it would be fun to do another Ask Me Anything About Adversity (AMAAA) thread. I did one back in January and it was a hit! (You can find it here.)
This time, I’m going to do something new. Instead of answering your questions directly in the comments, I’m going to answer them on camera.
Substack now offers the option to record videos, and I’ve been meaning to test out the feature. So let’s have the best of both worlds — I can rest my wrists and also try out a new feature at the same time. If it goes well, I can do more video posts in the future.
What can you ask me? Anything really, but here are a few suggestions:
Advice on a challenge you’re facing
Resilience strategies for a given situation
Questions about my rare disease/adversity journey
Book/article recommendations
Uconn basketballAnything else related to adversity
Put your question in the comments below👇, or if you prefer, you can email it to me.
A few notes and caveats:
I’m not a doctor so I can’t offer medical advice, nor am I a therapist.
If no one asks any questions, I’m just going to stare into the camera the whole time. Trust me, it will be awkward.
There’s an off chance I melt down on the 30th take and give up. If that happens — I’ll put the odds at 5% — I’ll answer your question in the chat.
Please send in your questions by next Monday, August 12.
Looking forward to seeing how this goes. Wish me luck!
Chris
Upgrading to a paid subscription makes it possible for me to grow Hello, Adversity and continue writing. Any support you can provide is greatly appreciated!
This is such a great initiative, Chris! I'm really curious about the video format on Substack too. My question is: Do you ever get caught up in thinking about the injustice of the adversity you're facing, and how do you manage this? How do you stop yourself from spiralling down a path of comparison and negativity? I think we can all learn a lot from your wealth of experience and insights!
Hi Chris,
My question is how do you shift your mindset when you're having a bad day with your disease?
I love your writing, I don't think you give yourself enough credit for the quality of work you do. You're very talented.
